This beautiful bird is the quetzal and is the national bird of Guatemala. In fact it's name is also used as the currency!
Very highly sought after by eco tourists and bird watchers, it does suffer from habitat loss but has several protected areas across its range.
There's a fabulous Mayan legend that these birds sang before the Spanish conquest and that until the land is truly free they will keep their silence. The Mayans considered the quetzal as the god of air and was a symbol of goodness and light in their culture.
