100 Day Project: Pygmy three-toed sloth

100 Day Project: Pygmy three-toed sloth

Day 7/100
Pygmy three-toed sloth

IUCN Status : Critically Endangered (population decreasing)

The pygmy three-toed sloth is one of 4 three toed sloth species and is also known as the monk sloth or dwarf sloth. It was only recognised as it’s own distinct species in 2001. They are the smallest of all the sloth species and almost nothing is known about their habits including diet, home range and lifespan.

Did you know that

• Pygmy three-toed sloths are only found on one island (Isla Escudo de Veraguas) which is less than 5km square!

• the island they live on is uninhabited by humans (though fishermen, tourists, and locals do visit) but they are under threat as efforts are being made to create tourist destinations there

• the algae that grows on it’s fur is thought to be transferred from mother to baby and is a unique algae species

We’re 7 days into the project now! I’m really enjoying doing quick sketches every almost every day. What’s been your favourite animal so far?
