100 Day Project Day 24 : Arapaima
24/100 - Arapaima
The arapaima is actually a fish I learnt about by playing Animal Crossing Wild World back in 2005ish! Haha. In fairness I learnt about a lot of fish and insects through that game!
The arapaima, or piraracu, is one of the largest freshwater fish in the world and is found in South America. They’re air breathers, which means they can’t stay underwater for longer than 10-20 minutes at a time before they need to come up for air. They make a distinctive gulping sound when they take in air which allows fishermen to pinpoint their location. In 2013 it was discovered that there are actually two species (possibly more) of arapaima. By around 2010 their populations had nearly been fished to extinction but thanks to conservation efforts their numbers have increased. The arapaima is listed as data deficient by the IUCN so we can’t be fully sure how well the species are faring.
