Quokkas are known for their mischievous grins but did you know that they're actually a member of the wallaby family? Famously found on Rottnest Island just off the coast of Western Australia, quokkas were historically also found on the mainland, though their populations there have severely declined and they're now only found in two locations there.
Sadly quokkas are classed as vulnerable due to habitat loss and alteration. In 2015 there were roughly thought to be 14,000 individuals in the wild however a wildfire in one of their mainland habitats nearly wiped out that population so the number is thought to be considerably less.
