Desert Tortoise

Desert Tortoise

This is for the prompt "desert", this grumpy little guy is a desert tortoise (also known as the desert turtle). There's actually two species of tortoise, found in the Southwest USA and Northeast Mexico deserts. They live in burrows where they spend 95% of the time. An adult desert tortoise can live up to a year without access to water.
Sadly these guys are classed as vulnerable, mostly due to habitat loss and human interference. Proposed wind and solar farms could take up large chunks of the tortoises habitat. Under the Endangered Species Act it's actually illegal to handle these animals as their natural defense is to void their bladders leaving them even more vulnerable and in desperate need of water.
