Draw With Tash : Thresher Shark

Draw With Tash : Thresher Shark

It's #DrawWithTash time! This week's prompt was the thresher shark.

These are actually my favourite sharks - look at that whip like tail! And how cute are their faces. Adorable. There's actually 3 known species of thresher shark, the pelagic, big eye and common thresher. The common thresher can be spotted in the summer off the coasts of the UK.

They're easily identifiable by their long tails which can be up to half the length of their entire body! Sadly as with all sharks they are caught hunted for their fins and caught as bycatch in fishing nets. They're also a target for sports fishers, and whilst most sport fishers practice catch and release, post-release mortality of common threshers can be as high at 78% if they're caught by their tails. Common threshers are listed on the IUCN red list as vulnerable with a declining population in the Northern Atlantic and Mediterranean.
