Green Sawfish

Green Sawfish

Loving painting again! This little critter is a green sawfish. The largest of the sawfish species (their saw can be up to 1/3 of its total length!). Sadly their rostra can also get caught in fishing nets and they’re often caught as bycatch.
Green sawfish are an EDGE species, which means they have few close relatives and are evolutionary distinct. They’re listed by the IUCN as critically endangered so if we don’t take steps to save them now then we may lose this species forever!
When I was a kid my family used to take us a lot to Sydney Aquarium and they had a sawfish tank as a focal species one summer. We spent a lot of time in the aquarium visiting the sawfish!
Have you ever seen a sawfish? Tell me about it!
