Inktober Day 6: Tufted deer

Inktober Day 6: Tufted deer

Day 6; tufted deer

We’re almost a week into inktober! Today’s weird and wonderful animal is the tufted deer, easily recognisable from their black tufts and little vampire like fangs that the males have!

They’re found mostly in China in forests with a high elevation though they do make occasional appearances in more cultivated areas that humans have created. Sadly they’re hunted for their idea which is considered a luxury textile and their habitat is rapidly disappearing. Whilst the Chinese government hasn’t protected tufted deers on a national level, they are protected provincially in some areas. There is currently a breeding programme in place in zoos with the plan to reintroduce more gene diversity to prevent inbreeding in the wild.
