Shark Week 2020 : Greenland shark
It’s the most wonderful week of the year! It’s shark week! At least if you’re in the US, for us UK based shark lovers we’ll have to wait until Aug 16th for sharky goodness.
To celebrate I wanted to share some of my favourite shark species to celebrate shark week. So expect to see a lot of shark content over the next few days!
Kicking things off today with the Greenland shark, also known as the gurry shark.
These elusive sharks are one of the largest shark species, growing up to 5 meters (roughly 16ft) long and can be found in the cold, dark waters of the Arctic. They’re listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN as historically they were hunted for their liver oil (in the 1900s). Nowadays they’re still occasionally caught as bycatch by trawlers and in gillnets and sadly their population numbers are unknown.
